Embracing the enchanting monsoon season while not delving into the captivating realm of India's Western Ghats would be an injustice to the serene beauty that nature has painted. Fondly etched in my memory is a day trip to Matheran, a haven where time seemed to pause in blissful idleness. This delightful escapade, accompanied by my ever-enthusiastic mother, remains a treasured recollection. Opting for a road voyage spanning approximately 90 kilometers from Mumbai, the journey unfolded along well-kept roads, revealing the awe-inspiring grandeur of the ghats. A notable contrast arose as the steep inclines of these hills made driving a more exhilarating feat compared to the gentle slopes of Mahabaleshwar. Arriving at Martheven, the first step involves parking your vehicle at the designated spot called Dasturnaka. This serves as the starting point for your expedition within the picturesque Matheran hill station. Notably, Matheran stands as an automobile-free haven, adding to its unique charm. A sought-after weekend retreat, the hill station welcomes a steady stream of visitors seeking respite. Upon reaching Dasturnaka, you're required to secure a parking ticket, followed by the acquisition of an entry pass, marking the commencement of your adventure.
With tickets in hand, we embarked on a brisk stroll towards the heart of the hill station. Welcoming us was a gracefully adorned entrance, marked by a verdant gateway. Stepping inside, the landscape came alive with a bustling hub of horse riders ready to ferry travelers to various corners of Matheran. Not far off, a short distance away, the Matheran train station stood, a vital part of the Matheran-Neral hill railway. This charming train route, spanning from Neral to Matheran, offers a delightful journey. The train meanders through Matheran's primary market, ultimately reaching its final destination. Our initial choice was to explore on foot or utilize alternative modes of transportation, leaving the train ride to be savored on our return, a leisurely way to bask in the scenic splendor.
Among the array of alternative transportation options, in addition to horse riders, one fascinating choice is the human-driven carts known as "hard carting." Opting for this, I arranged a cart for my mother's convenience. The local individuals who provide these services earn their livelihood from such daily endeavors. For the distance between the entrance of the hill station and the main market, the cost was around 700 rupees. Considering the substantial strength and effort involved in this task, it's clear they charge less than deserved. Our journey commenced, with me capturing fleeting moments through photographs and relishing the captivating natural beauty. The melodious tunes of birds and the rustling of winds enveloped the surroundings, akin to a serene stroll through a woodland. Despite the occasional variations in temperature due to the early rainy season, I remained resolute about exploring the main market area upon arrival.
Upon our arrival at the market, a gentle rain began to descend. Promptly, we retrieved our umbrellas and settled on a bench thoughtfully placed near the main market and train station, the bustling hub known as the main market train station. There we remained, taking in the surroundings for close to half an hour, or perhaps even more until the rain subsided entirely. With the conclusion of the rainfall, we embarked on a leisurely stroll within the market's vibrant confines.
A myriad of shops awaited, each offering a diverse array of products. Notably, "Chikki," a local delicacy renowned in Matheran, was prominently featured. Numerous stalls showcased this treat, along with shops displaying local handicrafts, diminutive curios, and an enticing selection of clothing. Engaging in the lively market experience entailed a fair amount of bargaining, a part of the shopping culture here. The marketplace also extended a profusion of culinary options, with various food stalls and fine dining establishments gracing the scene. Additionally, nestled within the market were guest houses and mini-hotels, a testament to the area's suitability for overnight stays.
The ambiance within the market exuded an energetic charm as people meandered about. The scene was adorned with tourists peddling an assortment of hats and trinkets. Our leisurely exploration led us to traverse the market's expanse, wandering from corner to corner, dipping into various shops, and immersing ourselves in the colorful ambiance. Eventually, we decided to indulge in a light lunch, setting the stage for our eventual journey back. This was my second visit to this enchanting place, and it held a different charm. The first time, I came here with my colleagues for a day trip, but the focus was on a long walk through the lush forest. I recall visiting prominent viewpoints, admiring a dam, capturing scenic landscapes, and relishing local cuisine at a charming eatery. Sadly, I missed the chance to board the toy train then. However, this time, I ensured the return journey was on the train. Tickets in hand, we settled on the station platform, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the "queen of hills." When the train arrived, we secured two comfortable seats, anticipation coursing through us as the journey commenced. As the train chugged along, I found myself lost in the mesmerizing beauty of the landscape that enveloped us. Surprisingly, the 30-minute train ride felt like the blink of an eye.
In conclusion, my second visit to Matheran was a delightful rediscovery of the serene beauty this hill station has to offer. From forest walks and picturesque viewpoints to charming markets filled with local treasures, Matheran never fails to enchant its visitors. Riding the toy train back was a highlight, allowing me to savor the breathtaking landscapes one last time. This trip reminded me that not every adventure needs a packed itinerary; sometimes, the best journeys are the ones where you let nature embrace you, absorbing its tranquil energy. With its lush greenery and timeless allure, Matheran is a place where one can find profound peace and rejuvenation. Until the next visit, I carry with me the memories of a day well spent in this idyllic haven. In retrospect, this short escapade made me realize that some trips aren't about ticking off a checklist but rather about surrendering to nature's embrace, absorbing its serene energy, and finding profound peace.
