As the monsoon breathes life into the bustling city of Mumbai, it creates an ideal time for travel and exploration. With the weather cooling down and nature adorned with its verdant splendor, it was the perfect moment for me to embark on a long-awaited pilgrimage to Triyambakeshwar, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. Situated in the serene Trimbak Village of Nashik District, Maharashtra, this sacred abode promised both a picturesque journey and a profound spiritual experience. Let me take you along as I recount my adventure.

The Journey Begins: In November, my initial attempt to visit Triyambakeshwar was thwarted when my car broke down midway. Determined to fulfill my quest, I patiently waited for over six months until the monsoon arrived, lending an air of freshness and renewal to the landscape. This time, I devised a new plan for my journey, incorporating the best of both worlds: a train ride on the way there and a road trip on the return. This way, I could relish the joy of different travel experiences, each with its unique charm.
We embarked on our expedition by boarding the Vande Bharat Express from Thane in the early morning, with excitement in our hearts and a longing for spiritual solace. As the train chugged along, it meandered through the picturesque Kasara Ghat section, offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding hills draped in a shroud of mist. The monsoon's arrival added a touch of mystique to the journey, as dark clouds danced in the sky, occasionally unleashing heavy showers that transformed the horizon into a painter's canvas.
Upon reaching Nashik Road Station, we found it convenient to book an OLA Cab to reach our destination, though ride-sharing services like Ola and Uber were not permitted within the station premises. However, I would recommend opting for a local cab right from the beginning, especially during the rainy season when carrying luggage and navigating the station premises could be cumbersome. It's always better to have a hassle-free experience, enabling you to fully immerse yourself in the journey.
The Divine Essence Beckons: As we ventured forth towards the tranquil Trimbak Village, a sense of anticipation filled the air. The spiritual significance of Triyambakeshwar as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India had always intrigued me. These sacred sites, dedicated to Lord Shiva, hold immense energy and have long attracted pilgrims from far and wide seeking spiritual fulfillment. Having previously visited other revered destinations like Shirdi, Dwarka, Amritsar, Puri, and Kamakhya etc. I knew that Triyambakeshwar would be no different in terms of its profound positivity and spiritual aura.
We arrived at our hotel, Three Leaves, which offered a touch of luxury compared to other properties in Trimbak. I always prioritize well-maintained and clean accommodation options that also provide in-house food services. One of the major advantages of this hotel was its proximity to the temple; it was just a short walk away. After our journey, we were quite hungry since we didn't have much food on the train. It was around 11 am, and we were looking for something comforting yet not too heavy. We decided to order sandwiches and a couple of cups of tea to temporarily satiate our hunger. Once we had enjoyed our small meal, we refreshed ourselves in the room.
The Balcony's Panoramic Vista: The room was pleasantly furnished and had a small balcony that offered breathtaking views of the legendary Brahmagiri Mountains and the Anjaneri Mountains. The playfulness of white clouds peeking in and out from the mountain peaks added to the charm. The heavy rain showered the landscape, and I could witness the waterfalls flowing like delicate threads attached to the mountains. The combination of dark clouds and misty white veils created a monochromatic ambiance that enveloped the entire vista.
Within the hotel premises, there were mango and jamun trees, their branches laden with abundant fruits. The sight of little birds chirping happily, taking shelter under the branches, and enjoying the rain, added to the delightful atmosphere. Witnessing their carefree flight amidst nature's beauty instilled a sense of liberation and appreciation for the harmonious connection we share with the natural world.
As I stood on the balcony, sipping tea and embracing the serenity around me, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to be immersed in such picturesque surroundings. The captivating scenery, the melodic symphony of raindrops, and the harmonious coexistence of flora and fauna created a tranquil haven that rejuvenated the soul.
The Fulfilling Darshan: A Timeless Experience of Sacred Grace: After a satisfying lunch, we made our way towards the highly anticipated Triyambakeshwar Temple. Despite the late afternoon hour and the drizzling rain, we braved the weather with umbrellas in hand, determined to reach our destination. Following the lane that led to the temple, we were captivated by the sight of the majestic Brahmagiri Mountain standing tall in the backdrop. Its presence evoked memories of the awe-inspiring Kedarnath Temple, nestled amidst the Himalayas.
Upon our arrival, we were disappointed to discover that the VIP darshan counter was closed due to the overwhelming rush of devotees inside the temple premises. Our spirits dampened, and we contemplated returning the next morning for another attempt.
However, as fate would have it, the heavens intervened, and the drizzle transformed into a downpour. Seeking refuge, we took shelter under the roof of a nearby local shop. As we waited for the rain to subside, approximately an hour passed. To our surprise, as the intensity of the rain diminished, the VIP darshan coupon counter was reopened. Seizing the opportunity, I swiftly obtained the necessary donation receipt, and we were granted entry through the North gate, exclusively designated for VIP pass holders. Meanwhile, the general darshan queue continued from the east gate.
As we stepped into the temple courtyard, an overwhelming sense of reverence washed over me. The view before me, adorned with the grandeur of the historic temple, was nothing short of breathtaking. This architectural marvel, standing tall for over 200 years, was a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of our ancestors.
Inside the temple premises, meticulous arrangements were made to ensure a smooth movement of devotees. The queue system was well-organized, with benches lining the pathway and fans installed to provide relief from the summer heat. It was evident that the temple administration took great care to prioritize the comfort of the visitors.
On the day of our visit, the queue seemed unusually long due to the auspicious occasion of Devshayani Ekadashi. Although our visit was not planned to coincide with this special day, I couldn't help but appreciate the serendipitous timing. Devotees of all age groups were present, some accompanied by their families, others in the company of friends, and some solitary individuals seeking solace in their devotion. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they were united by their shared faith and reverence for the divine.
The ambiance within the temple courtyard was palpable, exuding a powerful aura. As we slowly made our way towards the entrance of the Sanctum Sanctorum, I could sense the positive vibrations emanating from everyone around me. Devotees intermittently chanted the name of Lord Triyambakeshwar with great energy, filling the air with their fervent devotion.
The entrance to the Mandapam, or the hall, was narrow, consisting of three doors. The east and north doors served as entrances, while the south door was designated for exit. Inside the Mandapam, the queues for both general devotees and VIP pass holders merged, creating a slight struggle to enter. The temple, constructed with black stone, boasted intricate carvings depicting mythological characters and events.
Amidst the throngs of devotees within the Mandapam, we finally found ourselves in front of the Sanctum Sanctorum. The Shivalinga housed within the temple is unique, as it represents the simultaneous worship of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva in the form of three lingas. The linga is positioned at a considerable depth, so a large mirror has been strategically placed to allow devotees to catch a glimpse of the Lord's divine presence through its reflection. It is important to note that devotees are allowed only a brief five-second glimpse before making way for others.
In those fleeting moments, time seemed to stand still. As I beheld the resplendent adornments of the Lord and basked in the energy of the Supreme, I felt overwhelmed with a profound sense of joy and gratitude. Afterward, we made our way towards the South gate for our exit, but before departing, I took a moment to appreciate the grandeur of the Mandapam. Its circular domed ceiling held a magnificent sparkling chandelier, illuminating the space. The intricately carved pillars and walls, adorned with depictions of deities, showcased the temple's meticulous craftsmanship. It was evident that this masterpiece of black stone architecture was a labor of love, taking 31 years to complete.
As we left the temple premises, our hearts filled with a deep reverence for the divine and an appreciation for the architectural marvel that stood before us.
Trimbak's Lively Alleyways: A Tapestry of Devotees and Shops: Before returning to the hotel, I made sure to purchase Dumroo (A Power Drum), a traditional musical instrument, as a souvenir for my colleagues. We ventured into one of the local handicraft shops, where I found a mini Damroo that would serve as a cherished reminder of this beautiful journey. Placing it inside my car, I knew it would evoke fond memories whenever I glanced at it.
The lanes surrounding the temple were bustling with activity. Numerous shops enticed visitors with their array of handicrafts, local crafts, food items, breakfast and snack stalls, tea vendors, and sweet shops. Devotees and tourists alike filled the streets, while shopkeepers diligently attended to their daily chores, creating a vibrant atmosphere.
As dusk approached, we decided to return to the hotel, this time opting for an autorickshaw. The entire darshan process, including waiting time and shopping, took approximately 2-3 hours. Exhausted yet content, I fell into a peaceful slumber that night. The fatigue of the day melted away, replaced by a profound sense of satisfaction at having witnessed something grand and experienced moments of pure magic.
Promises of More to Explore: The following morning, as planned, our return journey commenced with a road trip. I had arranged for a cab through the hotel staff, who connected me with a reliable local driver. With anticipation in the air, we bid farewell to the hotel, knowing that there was much more to explore in this enchanting town nestled at the foothills of the Brahmagiri Mountains.
If you are young and full of energy, I highly recommend embarking on a trek up the Brahmagiri Mountains. Climbing 700 steps, you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the town and the awe-inspiring sight of the origin of the Godavari River, often referred to as the Ganga of the South. It promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, leaving you spellbound by the beauty that unfolds before your eyes.
As I left the town behind, my thoughts lingered on the many wonders left to explore. The scenic drive through the Western Ghats via the Ghoti-Igatpuri road, accompanied by the breathtaking sight of the Vaitarna Dam's plains, reminded me of the innate artistry of nature. Like an artist meticulously painting a canvas, nature crafted a magnificent masterpiece, and I felt blessed to have been a witness to its splendor.
In the embrace of Triyambakeshwar's sacred realm, I found solace and witnessed the beauty of divine grace. Through scenic train rides and enchanting road trips, I embarked on a journey that filled my heart with joy and my soul with tranquility. The melodies of rain, the mist-covered mountains, and the bustling alleys filled with devotees and artisans created a tapestry of unforgettable experiences. May the memories we've shared continue to inspire and uplift, guiding us toward greater happiness and inner awakening. May the echoes of Triyambakeshwar's divine grace continue to resonate within us, guiding us on our paths as we navigate the vast ocean of existence. Let us embrace each moment with gratitude, love, and a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things.
